Oh, and just in case you are not sure what aquaponic gardening is; here is a very brief explanation.

In a nutshell; aquaponics is a combination or coming together of aquaculture – raising fish – and hydroponics (growing plants in water without soil) all joined together in one happy integrated system.

The primary thing you should understand about this system is that it melds the principles of aquaculture with those of hydroponic gardening, which results in a brand new and very efficient way of growing plants and fish at the exact same time.

Because this system heavily depends on fish (it’s the fish that provide the food for the plants), you  should take excellent care of them in order for the system to provide the best results.

This means that you will need to see to it that the water has the ideal temperature levels, PH levels, correct lighting conditions along with the right amount of oxygen to keep the fish in good healthy conditions.

Generally, keeping track of the water and feeding the fish is all that you will need to do in order to grow nutritious healthy plants in aquaponic gardening.

It is all rather simple but the outcome is quite magnificent.

The wonderful thing about this type of gardening is that you will not have to keep bending over to care for the plants.

Placing the aquarium and the netting pots at waist level will make all the tasks you do in order to care for the plants and fish as simple as can be.

So, say farewell to all that work digging, bending, weeding and crawling on your hands and knees to take care of the plants you are tending in your garden.

Everything you require will be at your arms’ reach.

The aquaponic gardening system is ideal for any age group along with individuals from any walk of life.

It needs little time and effort plus the resulting produce is absolutely brilliant.

As long as you take good care of your fish, your plants will become larger and larger, and at the end you will harvest the very best vegetables you have ever tasted!

Now, if you are trying to come to a decision on whether to give aquaponic gardening a go, you will have to take into consideration on where you are going to put it and what this will entail.

    • Most types of fresh water fish will do, but take care to choose fish that are all happy with the same light and temperature conditions as each other.
  • What are the best vegetables to grow?
    • Most vegetables are suitable but avoid ones that prefer acid soil.

Next time people ask; what do you do in your spare-time, you can tell them – “I’m an Aquaponic Gardener…!!!”

Now you might be wondering, how does it all work?

Good question and you’ll be pleased to know, I will be keeping the answer as short as possible.

  • Fish produce waste
  • Worms and microbes convert the waste from the fish into fertilizer for the vegetables and plants
  • The plants filter the water so it returns back to the fish clean again

It seems to good to be true, nature working in perfect harmony, totally natural and organic, less work (no soil equals no weeds).

Below is a video from The Purdue University which takes you through the whole process of aquaponic gardening. It is extremely thorough and very eye opening as to the possibilities of this eco friendly sustainable way of growing fish and vegetables.

The video concentrates on large scale production but you will be able to see all the ways in which you could scale it to your own needs; it makes for fascinating viewing, enjoy.
