Asbestos cancer is more commonly known as mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma, the type of cancer most commonly associated with asbestos exposure, is a malignancy that occurs in the lining of the lungs, abdomen, and heart. A mesothelioma diagnosis is generally classified as one of the following three types: pleural mesothelioma which occurs in the lining of the lungs (the pleura); peritoneal mesothelioma which occurs in the lining of the abdominal cavity (the peritoneum); and pericardial mesothelioma which occurs in the lining of the heart (the pericardium).

Asbestos, which has been used for, quite literally, thousands of years as a fire-retardant and insulation material has long been connected to sickness, though not necessarily cancer until the last 50 years. Once asbestos was classified as a known carcinogen, the Environmental Protection Agency and Consumer Product Safety Commission imposed strict regulations on its use in commercial and industrial products. Unfortunately, many of the companies producing asbestos products were well aware of the hazards which asbestos posed and continued to expose workers and labourers to the harmful asbestos fibres.

Who will you put your money on in this Survival at any cost video?

A friend sent me this video to look at, and I must say it left me speechless. It is completely amazing, and I was utterly awestruck.

So, a big thanks to Mike Long for sharing.

It is quite amazing how delicately balanced survival in nature really is. A split second here or there can be the difference between life and death.

So, I’m going to share the video below with you. I hope you enjoy it.

Now, just for a moment, just try and imagine what survival means to the threatened tribes-people of the world. Their homes and lands go back for hundreds and thousands of years.

Now, because of modernization and administrations trying to tell people what is best for them, their very lives and survival are under threat. All in the name of what? I think it might come under the umbrella term of power and greed.

I have recently discovered a site that cares about their plight, it’s called: Survival International and is well worth a visit.

Check them out! I think you will be quite shocked by what you see on their website.

Some Ebola facts and possibilities about the virus, 2014.

The name for the Ebola virus is derived from the Ebola River due to the location of the first outbreaks in the mid-1970s. It Is being named an Ebola crisis because of the sheer number of people who have died since the outbreak.

Experts are telling people not to worry, that there’s almost no possibility the outbreak will spread to other countries. They’re saying that no other country will face the epidemic like the one being experienced in its country of origin.

But these same experts said the same thing about other epidemics and yet they spread from their country of origin. It only takes one person infected to spread the infection to countless others.

Many serious outbreaks, including Ebola, can spread like wildfire.

How easily? Imagine a theatre full of people. One of them is infected with Ebola but doesn’t yet know it.

He coughs and sprays droplets into the air, and these, in turn, are inhaled by the person in front of him, who opens his mouth to laugh at a funny scene in the show. And just like that, a pandemic is born.

Fact 1. Did you know there is more than one type of the Ebola virus – There are actually five.

Fact 2. It can take anywhere from 48 hours to three weeks before you notice any symptoms.

Fact 3. The long-term prognosis of surviving Ebola stands at a little over 10%.

Fact 4. There are numerous ways that you can contract the Ebola virus and many ways that it can be spread.

• Direct human contact is only one of the ways the virus is spread.
• Surfaces are the second way. The virus is tough enough to live on surfaces as long as 48 hours.
• The main way that the virus is spread is through human contact.
• Body fluids are how the virus is being spread so rapidly.
• Blood, sweat, saliva, urine, the list goes on and on.

It’s as simple as: if an infected person drinks from a cup and leaves a bit of their saliva on the side of the cup and you come in contact with it, you can contract the virus.

The main reason that the virus spreads so quickly with body fluids is that most people don’t realize at first that they are even sick.

Fact 5. Any item that’s been contaminated with the virus carries the potential of giving the virus to you.

• All it takes is for a person to touch a contaminated item and then rub his eyes or touch his finger to his mouth.
• Any open cuts on the skin can also be a way for the Ebola virus to get into the body if you touch an item that’s been contaminated.
• Soiled linens that someone with the virus has rested on can also be capable of spreading the virus.

Fact 6. Coming into contact with an infected animal is yet another way for the disease to be spread.

• One of the main culprits for spreading the virus is the fruit bat. When these animals bite another animal or another animal eats something that has the fruit bat’s infected saliva on it, the virus is spread.

Fact 7. Even if someone does survive the disease, there’s a potential that the once-infected person can still pass it on for up to just under 8 weeks.

One thing that the experts with this latest outbreak are trying to get people to grasp is that the Ebola virus spreads like wildfire, often outrunning any efforts to impede it because people with light symptoms are in contact with people who don’t have it yet.

So it becomes a vicious cycle, and it won’t end until the flow of people passing it to one another is somehow broken. But of course, the people who don’t have it often get it because the infected ones don’t always know that they are infected.

Polar bears are the world’s largest land predators. They evolved some 200,000 years ago from ancestors of the brown bear. They can be found living in Alaska, Canada, Russia, Greenland and Norway. Males range in size from 775 to more than 1,500 pounds while females are smaller topping out at 550 pounds.

Polar bears are social animals. However, whenever they are hungry they will kill almost anything to have something to eat. The most common thing they attack and consume are seals. They have also been known to hunt walrus and beluga whales. They are mostly concentrated within the Arctic circle which encompasses the Arctic Ocean. They can also be found around surrounding land masses.

Polar Bears and Global Warming

We have always been intrigued by Polar bears. With their dense, white coats, they appear unbelievably cuddly, especially the cubs. But the reality is, they are the largest and most potent bears on earth. Sadly, they are also on the list of endangered species, all because of the effects Polar Bears and Global Warming have on each other.

Polar bears are the heaviest bear species by more than four hundred pounds on average. They are mainly solitary animals.

One of their main sources of food is seal, but they will also scavenge for anything else they come across. Did you know, polar bears never drink water? They get it all they need from their food.

Polar Bears, have a full nictitating (blinking) membrane that enables them to see underwater plus it also filters the glare from the reflecting rays of the sun off the snow and ice. Unlike the upper and lower eyelids, as in humans the nictitating membrane moves horizontally over the eyeball.

Polar bears are not threatened because of other animals or because they are being hunted too much. Polar bears are threatened as a direct effect on how we as humans treat the earth and the environment. People have begun to take the earth for granted. They have treated it as though it is indestructible. When if fact, the earth is destructible, and we are destroying it.

The female of the species generally gives birth in the final two months of the year. They nearly always give birth to twins. When it is time to do so, the mothers will dig dens out of the snow and ice. They will remain in the den without food until the cubs are able to leave.

Nowhere can you see polar bears so up close and personal as you can in Churchill, Manitoba. When Hudson Bay freezes, between October and November, this town is overrun with polar bears as they travel their migration path. In early winter, they even stop to dine on the region’s seal population. For more up close views, you can take a tundra buggy (a converted school bus) into the migratory packs for a quick day trip. For longer exposure, there are tundra lodges that provide all day exposure to the bears in their native environment. Polar Bears and Global Warming must be tackled before it is too late.

Polar bears have some unique features. They can walk for up to 40 miles a day and swim up to 6 miles to catch seals. They stand over breathing holes and wait for a seal to come up for air. They then hit the seal with their left paw, it’s always their left paw for some unknown reason. When they have eaten, they can go 5 days without catching another seal.

Unlike other species of bears, polar bears have longer necks and smaller heads making them appear more streamlined. Despite their large sizes, they are incredibly fast being able to run up to 25 miles per hour. At speeds like this, a polar bear can outrun a reindeer. They are also excellent swimmers being able to swim at about 3 miles per hour but for considerable distances.

Sadly, as of May of 2008, the classification of polar bears upgraded to “threatened” allowing them increased protection under the Endangered Species Act. A combination of melting Arctic ice, oil drilling and over hunting have put these fascinating animals in danger of extinction, some experts saying there could be a reduction in the polar bear population of two thirds by 205 The polar bear is the first animal whose decline ties directly to global warming.

Let us hope that with continuing conservation efforts we can still save these magnificent creatures from disappearing along with the Arctic ice that they call home. Polar Bears and Global Warming is a real issue.

I’m sure you have heard that global warming is the number one culprit for: flooding, droughts, unusual weather patterns, sea levels rising, these are all head liners in news papers these days and blamed on the inhabitants of our planet Earth but is global warming fact or fiction?

As big industry carries on spewing out smoke from high stacks, vehicles exhausts fumes are improving but the numbers are getting ever larger, fossil fuel burners, and so on and so on, but are the perceived dangers truly a reality?

Global warming refers to recent global climate change that the IPCC has attributed to measured increasing levels of Atmospheric CO2 from Human activity. IPCC is the acronym for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, founded in 1988 by the United Nations.

To raise awareness about the impact of global warming, WWF-Paraguay made a lunch cooked on the asphalt.

The effects of carbon emissions seem to be the elephant in the room in our world.

We are all aware of the abuses of our environment and yet we do not compromise our lifestyles.

Global Warming – Conclusive Evidence Below

Damage control would cost money, regulating carbon emissions to an effective degree would cost money, and who would want to deplete their pocketbook; certainly not most big businesses.

So I ask, how worthwhile is the pursuit of wealth if your children’s children will not benefit from it?

Is wealth truly so pleasurable at the expensive of mankind?

Global warming can affect:

• Sea levels
• Coastlines
• Ocean acidification
• Ocean currents
• Seawater
• Sea surface temperatures
• Tides
• The sea floor
• Weather

Plus it can trigger lots of changes in ocean bio geochemistry; all of these affect the functioning of a society.

Global warming also has an enormous impact with respect to melting glaciers and ice sheets.

Higher global temperatures melt glaciers such as the one in Greenland, which flow into the oceans, adding to the amount of seawater.

A large rise (on the order of several feet) in global sea levels poses many threats.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), “such a rise would inundate coastal wetlands and lowlands, erode beaches, increase the risk of flooding, and increase the salinity of estuaries, aquifers, and wetlands.”

Global warming conspiracy theorists typically allege that, through worldwide acts of professional and criminal misconduct, the science behind global warming has been invented or distorted for ideological or financial reasons, or both.

They would, wouldn’t they!!

Global warming also affects weather patterns as they pertain to cyclones.

Scientists have found that although there have been fewer cyclones than in the past, the intensity of each cyclone has increased.

A simplified definition of what global warming means for the planet is that colder regions would get warmer and warmer regions would get much warmer.

However, there is also speculation that the complete opposite could be true.

A warmer earth could serve to moderate temperatures worldwide. There is still much that is not understood about the earth’s climate, because it is very difficult to make climate models.

As such, predicting the effects that global warming might have on our planet is still an inexact science.

Global warming effects on Earth affect many things like animals, plants, weather, glacier, humans, economy and many other things.

The Earth’s average temperature for each year of the last decade has been in the top 25 high temperatures of all time.

Indeed, 1998 and 2005 the warmest year in the history of the Earth.

The planet is getting warmer every day, and only because the change is gradual, we cannot ignore the fact that we are vulnerable to the threat of global warming.

The consequence of global warming and its effects on Earth is legion.

Many animal species are disappearing from the planet due to loss of habitat caused by global warming.

We need your help…

Even plants have not been spared from suffering the effects of global warming on earth.

Since the drastic temperature levels, different species of plants have had difficulty adapting to the area where once flourished.

Rising temperatures will lead to negative effects of the weather. Even minor changes in global temperatures will trigger a series of extreme weather and changing weather patterns around the world.

So that is what LEED© is at a high level, but what does it mean for Destiny USA? Destiny USA was rated Gold for “Core & Shell,” which focuses on constructing an eco-conscious, sustainable build-out that will ultimately be filled with tenants. The rating system goes Certified > Silver > Gold > Platinum, and is further broken down into a points system. As you can see in the report card below, out of the 62 total points available, Destiny USA earned 36 to qualify for the Gold rating.

Here’s a quick break down of what the scoring system actually entails:

Sustainable sites: Choose a site where there is minimal disruption of green space and where public services and transportation are readily available. During site construction pollution is reduced by preventing waterway sedimentation, airborne dust, and soil erosion.

Water Efficiency: Reduce reliance and taxation on local water supply and wastewater systems by implementing water efficiency efforts.

Energy & Atmosphere: Reduce energy use through correct installation and calibration of energy systems, set a minimum level of energy efficiency to reduce environmental impact, and ultimately reduce stratospheric ozone depletion.

Material & Resources: Collect and recycle as much waste as possible to prevent hauling and disposal of waste in landfills.

Indoor Environmental Quality: Enhance indoor air quality by setting minimum thresholds and preventing and/or minimalizing exposure to tobacco smoke.

Innovation in Design: Go above and beyond what’s already outlined in previous categories by addressing local environmental concerns, and by employing a LEED© accredited professional.

The Anthropocene (Human impact on the environment) is an informal geologic chronological term that serves to mark the evidence and extent of human activities that have had a significant global impact on the Earth’s ecosystems.

The term was coined recently by ecologist Eugene F. Stoermer and has been widely popularized by the Nobel Prize-winning atmospheric chemist, Paul Crutzen, who regards the influence of human behavior on the Earth’s atmosphere in recent centuries as so significant as to constitute a new geological epoch for its lithosphere.

To date, the term has not been adopted as part of the official nomenclature of the geological field of study, although it does appear it will likely be adopted.

Relations between the USA and China are already fragile with various disputes such as, rare earth minerals and the auto-industry raging on and now we have solar panels entering the arena (This news is over 12 months old but has anything changed?)

Now, we see a rise in tensions with the problems associated with solar panels. There are even suggestions that China will retaliate through the – World Trade Organization.

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration ordered tariffs of 31% and higher on solar panels imported from China, escalating a simmering trade dispute with China over a case that has sharply divided American interests in the growing clean-energy industry.

The Commerce Department announced the stiff duties Thursday after making a preliminary finding that Chinese solar panel manufacturers “dumped” their goods — that is, sold them at below fair-market value.

The widely anticipated ruling, if affirmed by U.S. trade officials this fall, is expected to have significant implications for both the global production of solar cells, now largely in China, and the growth of the solar energy industry in the U.S., which employs about 100,000 people in manufacturing, installation and services.

More than 60 Chinese firms, face a 31% duty on their exports to the U.S., retroactive to shipments made in February. All other Chinese exporters of solar cells will be hit with a tariff of 250%.

In just a few years, China has grabbed about half the U.S. market for solar panels.

The tariffs are more than what many industry executives and analysts were expecting.

They are on top of the Commerce Department’s duties of 2.9% to 4.7% imposed in March on Chinese solar panel imports for illegal subsidies.

Thursday’s announcement elicited immediate praise from U.S. solar panel manufacturers, who called the ruling an important victory for American jobs and the future of one of the country’s important renewable energy industries.

“The verdict is in,” said Gordon Brinser, president of SolarWorld Industries America in Hillsboro, Ore., which filed the original complaint in October that brought the Commerce Department investigation. “Commerce has now confirmed that Chinese manufacturers are guilty of illegally dumping solar cells and panels in the U.S. market.”

The cost of outfitting a typical home today with solar panels runs about $20,000 — half of what it did two to three years ago. Customers also benefit from a 30% tax credit until 2016. That doesn’t give the solar industry much time to become cost competitive with electric power, he said.

The tariffs would apply to Chinese-made solar cells, regardless of where the panels are made. Chinese solar energy companies could avoid the tariffs by shifting production of solar cells to nearby countries, then bringing those cells to China for assembly into panels.

Thursday’s action is one of the strongest by the Obama administration in addressing complaints of unfair Chinese trade and economic practices — an area that has made Obama a target of criticism from Republicans who say he’s too soft.

Earlier this year, Obama established a new trade enforcement unit to crack down on violators, specifically naming China as a potential target, as part of an overall strategy to boost domestic manufacturing, exports and jobs.

Robert Atkinson, president of the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation, a nonpartisan Washington think tank, said that even if the U.S. solar energy industry loses some workers in the short run, it’s important to apply measures to ensure fair competition for the long haul.

Of about 100,000 people employed in the industry last year, a little more than half were involved in solar installation, about one-fourth worked in manufacturing and the rest in sales and distribution, according to a Solar Foundation study….

Just when you thought it was safe to come in from the cold the Greenhouse Effect is being highlighted in the Arctic Ocean.

It seems wherever you look these days, there are new warnings on global warming, and now even the Arctic regions are coming under the spotlight.

A new airborne study with NASA contributions measured surprising levels of the potent greenhouse gas methane coming from cracks in Arctic sea ice and areas of partial sea ice cover.

(Phys.org) — The fragile and rapidly changing Arctic region is home to large reservoirs of methane, a potent greenhouse gas. As Earth’s climate warms, the methane, frozen in reservoirs stored in Arctic tundra soils or marine sediments, is vulnerable to being released into the atmosphere, where it can add to global warming.

Now a multi-institutional study by Eric Kort of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif., has uncovered a surprising and potentially important new source of Arctic methane: the ocean itself….
Kort, a JPL postdoctoral scholar affiliated with the Keck Institute of Space Studies at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, led the analysis while he was a student at Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass.

During five HIPPO flights over the Arctic from 2009 to 2010, Kort’s team observed increased methane levels while flying at low altitudes over the remote Arctic Ocean, north of the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas.

The methane level was about one-half percent larger than normal background levels.

But where was the methane coming from?

The team detected no carbon monoxide in the atmosphere that would point to possible contributions from human combustion activities.

In addition, based on the time of year, location and nature of the emissions, it was extremely unlikely the methane was coming from high-latitude wetlands or geologic reservoirs.

By comparing locations of the enhanced methane levels with airborne measurements of carbon monoxide, water vapor and ozone, they pinpointed a source: the ocean surface, through cracks in Arctic sea ice and areas of partial sea ice cover.

I have to admit that as fascinating as this study is, it still leaves me feeling rather cold in a global warming kind of way, (sorry, I had to get that in).

Alfredo Moser: Bottle light inventor proud to be poor

Alfredo Moser’s invention is lighting up the world.

Ultimate eco friendly lighting system

In 2002, the Brazilian mechanic had a light-bulb moment and came up with a way of illuminating his house during the day without electricity – using nothing more than plastic bottles filled with water and a tiny bit of bleach.

In the last two years his innovation has spread throughout the world. It is expected to be in one million homes by early next year.

So how does it work? Simple refraction of sunlight, explains Moser, as he fills an empty two-liter plastic bottle.

“Add two cap-fuls of bleach to protect the water so it doesn’t turn green [with algae]. The cleaner the bottle, the better,” he adds.

Wrapping his face in a cloth he makes a hole in a roof tile with a drill. Then, from the bottom upwards, he pushes the bottle into the newly-made hole.

“You fix the bottle in with polyester resin. Even when it rains, the roof never leaks – not one drop.”

The lamps work best with a black cap – a film case can also be used “An engineer came and measured the light,” he says. “It depends on how strong the sun is but it’s more or less 40 to 60 watts,” he says.

“It’s a divine light. God gave the sun to everyone, and light is for everyone. Whoever wants it saves money. You can’t get an electric shock from it, and it doesn’t cost a penny.”

Moser has installed the bottle lamps in neighbors’ houses and the local supermarket.

While he does earn a few dollars installing them, it’s obvious from his simple house and his 1974 car that his invention hasn’t made him wealthy. What it has given him is a great sense of pride.

How much energy do the lamps save?

The plastic bottles are up-cycled in the local community, so no energy is needed to gather, shred, manufacture and ship new bottles.
The carbon footprint of the manufacture of one incandescent bulb is 0.45kg CO2
A 50 Watt light bulb running for 14 hours a day for a year has a carbon footprint of nearly 200kg CO2

The idea has also caught on in about 15 other countries, from India and Bangladesh, to Tanzania, Argentina and Fiji.

Did Moser himself imagine that his invention would have such an impact?

“I’d have never imagined it, No,” says Moser, shaking with emotion.

“It gives you goose-bumps to think about it.”
