Through the centuries, scientists have found innovative ways to harness the power of the sun — from magnifying glasses to steam engines. Converting more solar power into electricity is high on the political agenda in many countries, amid the push to find domestic energy sources that are less polluting than fossil fuels.

Solar is growing quickly in the United States. According to the Solar Energy Industries Association, more solar was installed in the third quarter of 2011 than in all of 2009 combined.

Assisted by technological innovation and years of government subsidies, the cost of solar power — and wind power — has fallen sharply, so much so that the two industries say that they can sometimes deliver cleaner electricity at prices competitive with power made from fossil fuels.

At the same time, solar and wind power companies are telling Congress that they cannot be truly competitive and keep creating jobs without a few more years of government support.

Solar and wind companies argue that the tax breaks they are seeking are different. The tax credits can be taken only by businesses that are already up and running, so taxpayers are less likely to be stuck subsidizing a failing company, proponents say.

Without the new breaks, industry executives warn, they will be forced to scale back production and eliminate jobs in a still-weak economy.

President Obama, who has been a steadfast supporter of clean-energy programs, has already begun making a case for new government investment in clean energy projects as a way to foster both energy independence and employment at a time when Capitol Hill evaluates new laws in terms of job creation as well as budget cost or savings.

How do Photovoltaics Work?

by Gil Knier (courtesy of NASA)

Photovoltaics is the direct conversion of light into electricity at the atomic level. Some materials exhibit a property known as the photoelectric effect that causes them to absorb photons of light and release electrons. When these free electrons are captured, an electric current results that can be used as electricity.

The photoelectric effect was first noted by a French physicist, Edmund Bequerel, in1839, who found that certain materials would produce small amounts of electric current when exposed to light. In 1905, Albert Einstein described the nature of light and the photoelectric effect on which photovoltaic technology is based, for which he later won a Nobel prize in physics. The first photovoltaic module was built by Bell Laboratories in 1954. It was billed as a solar battery and was mostly just a curiosity as it was too expensive to gain widespread use. In the 1960s, the space industry began to make the first serious use of the technology to provide power aboard spacecraft. Through the space programs, the technology advanced, its reliability was established, and the cost began to decline. During the energy crisis in the 1970s, photovoltaic technology gained recognition as a source of power for non-space applications.

The diagram above illustrates the operation of a basic photovoltaic cell, also called a solar cell. Solar cells are made of the same kinds of semiconductor materials, such as silicon, used in the microelectronics industry. For solar cells, a thin semiconductor wafer is specially treated to form an electric field, positive on one side and negative on the other. When light energy strikes the solar cell, electrons are knocked loose from the atoms in the semiconductor material. If electrical conductors are attached to the positive and negative sides, forming an electrical circuit, the electrons can be captured in the form of an electric current — that is, electricity. This electricity can then be used to power a load, such as a light or a tool.

A number of solar cells electrically connected to each other and mounted in a support structure or frame is called a photovoltaic module. Modules are designed to supply electricity at a certain voltage, such as a common 12 volts system. The current produced is directly dependent on how much light strikes the module.

Multiple modules can be wired together to form an array. In general, the larger the area of a module or array, the more electricity that will be produced. Photovoltaic modules and arrays produce direct-current (dc) electricity. They can be connected in both series and parallel electrical arrangements to produce any required voltage and current combination.

Solar power is a brilliant way to maximize a free, renewable energy source, which benefits the environment whilst saving you money. The only factor for this to work is sunlight.

The solar power generator may seem to be very complicated and complex to create, but you should know that it’s actually the complete opposite as evidenced by many people who start to integrate this environmentally friendly system into their lifestyle.

The internet has plenty of instructional material and guides on the topic of constructing solar powered generation systems.

Once you purchase a good set of plans, you can research local hardware supplier and dealers that can carry the parts you need.

Many people are still apprehensive about solar power because of the bill of such a project.

They still think that it is not a wise investment. No one can blame them for they are used to the idea that it is a brand new technology and, as with any new technology, they will always be costly.

This is where they are wrong. Solar power technology has been around for years. Plus with recent technological innovations the prices have been coming down quite considerably.

Obviously prices will vary from area to area.

Building a DIY solar power system doesn’t require complicated technical skills or a degree in engineering; you just need some simple DIY skills, a few hand tools and some equipment available from local suppliers, ebay or your local highways department.

So, I thought I would make a compilation of some of my favorite solar energy pictures for your entertainment. Some of them are truly breathtaking, I only wish I could have witnessed them in person.

Solar flares and coronal mass ejections can quicken the solar wind. The solar wind is a flow of charged particles that spirals away from the Sun through space. This “electric breeze” can be harmful to astronauts. It can also affect satellites and cause power outages on Earth. One positive effect — a strong solar wind can lead to auroras. These are incredible displays of light in the night sky.

Aurora’s rarely reach below 60 kilometers, and can range up to 1000 kilometers. Aurora light results from solar shock-wave causing energetic electrons and protons to striking molecules in the Earth’s atmosphere.

Frequently, when viewed from space, a complete aurora will appear as a circle around one of the Earth’s magnetic poles.

I have included the following illustration because real information makes a difference in how we develop our opinions, and well informed opinions are fairly thin on the ground when it comes to the solar energy debate.

It important to keep track of the Earth’s radiation budget because the production of greenhouse gases seems to be affecting the natural balance. This creates concerns about rising sea levels, changing precipitation patterns, and an array of other possible effects. With the use of polar orbiting satellites, scientists hope to monitor changes in tropospheric and stratospheric temperatures to look for ways in which we are altering the Earth’s radiation balance. The four topographical regions chosen to do this activity represent four distinctly different terrains. Each region has a predominant feature: rain forest, water, ice, or desert. Each has a unique albedo (reflectance), absorbance ability and heat capacity. These factors, among others, determine how the Earth interacts with the input of solar radiation.
More at … Nasa education

This solar energy picture below of an Aurora – ‘above, Bear lake, Alaska’ – just had to be included, it looks like something from an alien world. “Quite amazing!”

And yes, it is possible to make your own working solar panels for your house, which is far more economical than purchasing panels and having them set up by the professionals.

>>> Building Your Own Solar Panels

There are also various kinds of solar panels, from simple to complicated. In addition to a trusted set of standards, here is a list of affordable materials you will require for a basic solar panel.

1. Copper flashing – This can be purchased from the average hardware shop, and costs around $5 per square foot. You will most likely require about 1/2 a square foot per unit.

2. Alligator clips – You will require 2 of these. They look something like the clamps on the end of jumper cable televisions, and are available at hardware stores.

3. A micro-ammeter that is sensitive enough to read currents between 10 and 50 microamperes. This can be bought at an electronic devices store.

4. Heat source – You can make use of a routine electric stove or hotplate for this. It is made use of to warm the copper flashing to produce an oxide layer.

5. Plastic bottle with the slim neck cut off, or large mouth glass jar – You will be flexing and placing the copper plates into this.

6. Saltwater – You will need a couple of tbsps of table salt mixed with hot tap water.

7. Sand paper – You will utilize this to cleanse the copper sheets prior to warming them. You can likewise make use of a wire brush.

8. Metal shears to cut the copper flashing

A few of these products can be scavenged from friends’ workshops, reusing centers (with authorization), or even your very own garage.

>>> Building Your Own Solar Panels

The copper sheet is cut in half, and one half is warmed on the electric stove burner till it turns black. As it cools, the black oxidation flakes off. This sheet and the “clean” copper sheet are bent and tucked into the bottle or container. The alligator clips are attached to the copper sheets and then to the micro-ammeter. Salt water is poured in, and the unit is placed in the sun. Essentially, you have actually constructed a solar battery.

It is essential to examine your very own energy needs prior to starting such a project. How much you can save depends in part on the amount of energy you make use of. If your home-made solar panels just cover a little fraction of your daily energy usage, you will should make numerous more to cover your home’s energy use, which will not be as cost effective as somebody whose energy requirements can be met with only a few panels.

Lancaster, California leads the Way with Solar Power Panels for the Home

The Mojave Desert city of Lancaster, California will make it a requirement that all new single-family homes built will have to be equipped with solar, starting in 2014.

Sounds like good news to me, the more solar power panels for the home are embraced the cheaper and more accessible they will become for all of us.

Here is the article From Mother Nature Network’s Matt Hickman:

Led by a solar-loving Republican mayor and blessed with plenty of sunshine, this Mojave Desert city will require all new single-family homes to be equipped with solar starting in 2014.

In the high desert city of Lancaster, Calif., mayor R. Rex Parris recently announced a pioneering update to the city’s residential building code: Starting on Jan. 1, 2014, all newly constructed single-family homes must include a 1.0 kW solar system at bare minimum.

A law mandating solar for all new homes? That’s right … a bold — and certainly historic — move but not entirely surprising for the Los Angeles County city of more than 155,000 that leads the state of California in solar generating capacity. Parris, hell-bent on branding his sprawling Antelope Valley community not just as the solar capital of California but as the “solar energy capital of the world,” has already overseen some major photovoltaic-related developments in the past couple of years.

Personal Recommendation From The Owner Of this Blog

We intend on giving you all the help and the most current up to date information on – How to live a more Eco-Friendly way of life.

But, on occasion there will be areas that will need more specialist and technical advice and that is when we will make a recommendation on where to find more detailed specialist information and some extra help!

How to build your own solar panels falls into this bracket.

While researching the subject of: are solar panels worth it and solar power kits, I found a really useful guide that may be of interest to you.

If you would to learn more about – ‘how to build solar panels’, I have provided a link below –

It is called…. Earth4Energy

Most notably, in 2010 Lancaster partnered with SolarCity to launch a successful solar financing program for homeowners, nonprofits and businesses called Solar Lancaster. According to Greentech Media, the 1.45-megawatt program — it extends not only to private homes and businesses but also to city hall, the Lancaster Performing Arts Center, Clear Channel Stadium, churches, schools and more — will generate $1.5 million annually through 2017 and then $800,000 per year for the next 20 years.

Additionally, Lancaster is home to several utility-scale solar production plants including eSolar’s groundbreaking Sierra Sun Tower.

The requirement that all new homes must be equipped with solar systems will be written into Lancaster’s “Residential Zones Update.” Reads a draft of the update: “The purpose of the solar energy system standards is to encourage investment in solar energy on all parcels in the city, while providing guidelines for the installation of those systems that are consistent with the architectural and building standards of the City.”

Specifically, all newly built single-family family homes on lots larger than 7,000-square-feet must have a 1kW to 1.5 kW system. The minimum for rural homes on lots greater than 100,00-square-feet is 1.5 kW.

Parris, who addressed the World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi this past January, acknowledged that the new regulations would be met with opposition by the building industry.

Lancaster — California’s 30th largest city and the fourth largest city in the Mojave Desert — was founded in the 19th century as a railway water stop. Aside from the presence of Edwards Air Force Base to the northeast and a storied aerospace legacy that it shares with neighboring Palmdale, it’s perhaps best known for being the childhood home of a young Minnesota transplant named Frances Ethel Gumm.

Taking advantage of the power of the sun’s ray to produce energy to power our house is very attractive; but the concern is:

“Is every single thing about solar power good?”

Residential solar energy system
pros and cons

Looking at the current cost of fossil fuel-based electrical power, by comparison to solar energy systems; to make the move to a solar energy system takes true resolve to create a more sustainable future, as it can be quite expensive.

The alternative is to build your own solar system, maybe form a local group where you can share and pool all your various skills and resources.

Nevertheless, with the expanding issues on the state of our planet earth, we seriously have to find other means of energy aside from the fuels power plants are utilizing today.

I think apart from initial costs, residential solar energy system pros and cons lean heavily towards the pros, if you would like to hear from an expert on the subject check out the personal recommendation below.

Where do you put yourself?

Whether you are a proponent of clean energy or simply care about where your finances go, looking at the benefits and drawbacks of domestic solar energy system will help you select whether to convert or not.

Advantages

Solar energy is free of cost

But do you know that the environment takes in 174 pettawatts of solar radiation? (How much is one petawatt? Well, in zeros it is 1,000,000,000,000,000 watts of power).

This means that we have ample source of complimentary energy to power every house in the world.

Sadly, much of our energy is still drawn from oil, gas and coal. But in recent times, there is a steady increase of demand for alternative and renewable energy like solar power.

It is approximated that the demand for alternative sources of energy will increase by 53 % by 2020.

Solar energy is clean, in constant supply and sustainable

Since the energy created from the sunlight’s rays do not produce by-products like those from non-renewable fuel source power plants (sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide, mercury or carbon dioxide), it does not contribute to contamination.

So it follows, the increase in using solar power and various other alternative kinds of energy will decrease the demand for greenhouse-gas producing power plants.

The costs of solar batteries is progressively decreasing, while the demand for solar panels has actually increased and is gradually rising on a month-to-month basis.

What are your thoughts or experiences about residential solar energy system pros and cons?
If you would like to share them, enter your thoughts in the box at the bottom of this post.

The boost in demand results to the improvement of solar modern technology as a whole. The prices of solar batteries have decreased on the average of 4 % every year over the past 15 years.

Solar panels can be set up on most rooftops, removing the trouble of finding an ideal location for setup.

Solar panels need little or no upkeep

The original solar technology is used for many satellites orbiting our planet today, and they require virtually no maintenance at all.

The majority of solar panel producers give 25 to 40 years warranty on their products.

Since the majority of areas of the nation get a considerable quantity of sunshine throughout the year, solar panels can be installed anywhere.

Numerous states provide tax credits and refunds to families who wish to install a solar energy system.

Get in touch with your state government to see level of these incentives.

Now for the residential solar energy system pros and cons, disadvantages: remember to share your thoughts in the comment box.

Disadvantages

While the prices of PV cells are in steady decrease, the cost of installation is considerably high as compared to the present electric cost. But the advantage is, after your preliminary costs, you do not have to pay on a monthly basis on electric costs for the rest of your life.

If you produce enough power, you will be able to sell it back to the power Co’s

On locations cities and areas with heavy contamination issue, solar energy might not work as great. Weather condition can also impact the efficiency of solar power.

Poor weather conditions can reduce the power output

These are general advantages and disadvantages you may encounter when thinking about the conversion to solar power system.

Your best bet is to base your decision on location, expense, budget plan, rebates, tax credits and functionality.

How can we benefit from Geothermal Heating and Cooling schemes?

Did you know that geothermal warming and air conditioning schemes are gathering popularity, and on very good grounds.

Geothermal heating pumps are not a newfangled notion – they have been around since the 1940’s – but with the advancement of the green movement, more and more people are becoming aware of this effective technology.

Nesjavellir Power Plant, Iceland

This is how it functions, plus a few of its benefits.

All day long, year in year out; our planet soaks up energy from the sun and stores it.

This is the reason the temperature beneath the planet’s surface is comparatively constant.

Beneath the frost line, there is more warmth in the winter and in the summer, it’s colder underground.

Geothermal warming and cooling schemes make use of this sun-to-earth power.

The two primary types of Geothermal heating and cooling schemes are: closed loop and open loop.

The two are based in the principle of the heat pump.

An open loop scheme in reality taps into ground water which is, comparable to the earth underground, at a reasonably invariable temperature.

The water is pumped-up into the geothermal heat pump where it is warmed, distributed through the house, and then brought back to the earth or utilized in other ways throughout the house.

Since the ground water temperature is hotter than the cool, exterior air, the heat-pump doesn’t have to operate too hard to warm the water.

Closed loop schemes distribute water and anti-freeze via a closed network of pipes.

The network of pipes are positioned underground, starting and finihing at the heat-pump in the dwelling’s basement.

While the fluid in the pipes circulates underground, it gets warmed or cooled by the pump, depending on which season of the year we are in.

Geothermal Power Station thematic

Schematics of a Geothermal Power Station

Hot water reservoir

Hot water from the Earth

Electrical power generation (with generator)

The generated electricity is fed into the network

Thereafter the rest of the hot water can still be used for heating purposes

Thermal energy can be reused

Cold water is fed back to the cycle to be reheated by the Earth

Some Key Benefits

There are numerous benefits to geothermal heating and cooling schemes.

Some examples:

Lower demands on electricity as less is used in the generation of warm or cool air with geothermal schemes.

Electricity necessitates fossil fuels to be produced.

Geothermal heating cuts back the need of such fuels.

Lower electricity bills.

Geothermal schemes can help save energy and water, because the heated water created in an open-loop scheme can be utilized in assorted household applications.

Geothermal schemes are more comfortable as there is less variation in interior temperatures.

There are no unsightly, over-ground elements that make noise and can be an eyesore.

The geothermal scheme is below ground and in the dwelling’s basement

There are no toxic emissions produced by geothermal schemes.

There is a tremendous amount of versatility with these schemes.

You can customize a system for virtually any type of home or building.

So, how do you get started?

That will be answered in a later article.

In the meantime if you have any thoughts or ideas you would like to share on ‘geothermal heating and cooling‘ please do so in the comments box and please click the share button, many thanks.
