There are steps you can take to encourage your teen to be Eco-conscious. Beginning early is optimum, but not crucial. No matter what age your kid is, it’s not late to teach them about the environment.

Here are 8 useful steps you can take.

[unordered_list style=”tick”]

1. Set yourself up as an example
The first step is to dedicate yourself to a more Eco-conscious way of living. No matter what your child’s age is, she or he is seeing and picking up from you on a subconscious level.

2. Tap into their inner activist
Teens are naturally inclined towards being an activist, and take pleasure in having a solid aim to focus on. Encourage this tendency towards Eco-consciousness, encourage your teen to volunteer with a neighborhood environmental group or task-force. Your teenager can also sign up with a regional group of his/her peers who are committed to environmental awareness.

– Ecokids Chain Reaction –

3. Urge participation
Most teenagers are old enough to take part in food purchase and preparation. Give them a list and have them do the grocery shopping, which will instruct them to select healthy foods. Then, let them prepare a meal or a dish with the foods they have purchased. This will not only provide them a recognition for the work involved in meal planning and preparation, however it will also provide them with a brand-new respect for food itself.

4. Find out all you can
You can’t impart understanding you don’t have! Research ecological awareness and the Eco-conscious ideals so that you can chat intelligently with your teenager and address his or her questions.

5. Do hands-on tasks
Hands-on activities can be powerful teachers. Have your teenager make his/her own fabric carry in a basic sewing project, making use of outgrown or deteriorated clothing if you can. (These sewing jobs could be given as presents, too, continuing the lesson on thriftiness that supports being Eco-conscious.) Urge your teen to take part in repairing things around your house, instructing him or her to shun extreme consumerism and refurbish before replacing, children are very good at these kinds of activities.

6. Give friendly insights as the opportunities present themselves
Whether you are at the farmers’ market, food preparation, reusing, and so on you can take the moment to make brief remarks (teenagers dislike lectures!) about the procedure and what it indicates, so just draw them in gently.

7. Develop green habits
As soon as a behavior becomes a routine, it is not a duty. Make it a practice to restrict water use by taking much shorter showers, for example. One essential chore-turned-habit is recycling. Once it becomes a part of your way of life, your teenager will take those habits into his or her own independent life.

8. Grow things in your garden together
Indoor or outdoor gardens are a good way to teach your teenage kid about the earth and what is entailed in growing plants. If possible, grow natural herbs or foods that your teen can see the “full circle” of from first sprout to the table.

[/unordered_list]

If you would like to know how to introduce your children to organic gardening, here are some organic vegetable gardening tips for kids, just to help you to get started on the right track.

– Organic Vegetable Gardening Tips For Kids –

Make sure you click here to like > Daily Green Post on Facebook < to be updated every time we find new tips on helping the environment, plus exciting and innovative new ways to help you and your family.

Kids have a natural fascination with growing things. You can promote that natural interest by introducing them to natural organic vegetable gardening.

If you are interested in organic vegetable gardening tips for kids see my recommendation for… >> Organic vegetable gardening <<

Here are some ideas for participating and encouraging your children in the organic vegetable garden in your own yard.

[unordered_list style=”tick”]

In the number one spot of our organic vegetable gardening tips for kids is: begin a little at a time, and possibly even indoors. Sprout alfalfa seeds, chives, or various other easy-growers in the window sill.

Think about container gardening for your kid’s first outdoor organic veggie experiment. Container gardening is really flexible, and lends itself easily to natural approaches. Tomatoes, bell peppers, cucumbers, and other veggies can be grown in containers. Numerous flowers and natural herbs succeed in pots as well, because of the fact that the plants are in a controlled environment, many problems like pests and weeds are much easier to handle using organic methods.

Organic Food Benefits – Start them young

Discuss the “poisons chemicals” that are placed on plants when non-organic gardening practices are made use of.
Depending on the age of the child, you can enter into the impacts that these toxins have on animals and individuals.
Mention how your kids can touch the plants and put his/her hands in the dirt without worry of getting toxins on them when using totally organic methods.

Foster an appreciation of “good” pests in the yard. Kids often view all insects as scary or yucky, however since they are an essential component of organic gardening, instruct your children about how useful they are.
Think about investing in a small environment where your kid can capture a pest and observe it – shop sold “bug vacuums” are terrific for this.

Take your kids to have a look at the books at the local library about organic gardening and valuable bugs and insects.

Involve your kids in organic approaches to weed and insect control. Introduce the idea of just pulling weeds and excavating them, instead of spraying them with herbicide.
Give your child examples about how easy it is to mix up a soap insecticide using the soap you typically wash your hands with (1-2 tsps per quart of water). And point out that there is no fear of getting that on your skin!

When you are growing vegetables organically, include your children in the preparation of it. Let him or her pick ripe tomatoes, corn, natural herbs, and so forth to provide food for your table. Point out that you only need to rinse the veggies, due to the fact that there are no poisons on it.

If you are growing flowers, visit your public library or browse the web for concepts for nature crafts. Your fledgling natural gardener could delight in pressing flowers, making bouquets, or weaving flower wreaths. You can make fun animal shapes with certain flower’s seed sheathings. There is a wonderful array of possibilities for utilizing your yard flowers and plants artistically.

Visit an organic farmers market for motivation. Let your child see how big and productive organic farming (and gardening!) can be.

Start or see an organic area gardens in your area. This is a fantastic means for your children to become involved in the area and make friends who have similar interests.

[/unordered_list]

Nature – Provides the ultimate natural playgrounds for Children.

Every year parents invest hundreds and hundreds of dollars on toys and computer games for their children.

While lots of these are terrific for keeping young minds and bodies energetic, a great many of them are completely unneeded and just encourage people to look for cyber thrills instead of real-life ones.

Would you like some help with teaching your children >>Parental Training

Make sure you like > Daily Green Post on Facebook < to be updated every time we find new tips on helping the environment, plus exciting and innovative new ways to help you and your family.

Natural Playgrounds

Sure children need organized play, but they also require “free” play and this is easy to do when the world’s biggest play ground is right outside your back entrance.

Why not encourage them to play outdoors and join them for some fun?

Every toy, book, and television show that comes out has been made and revamped a number of times in order to make it more academic, while also amusing for children.

The great aspect about nature is that, while being entertaining and promoting creativity, it’s also a good teacher.

Natural Playgrounds

Nature can be very instructional for children showing them the essentials of science, economics, and creativity.

It’s cheap. Depending upon where you live, exploring nature is normally quite economical, if not cost-free.

Maybe just start by setting up games in your own backyard and then going to the community park, or perhaps visiting the community nature facility or state park (which typically have low cost fees or memberships).

By doing this, you don’t have to pay for costly toys, jungle gyms, or memberships to expensive entertainment centers, but you still get the benefit of satisfying and instructional play.

It makes them use their mind. Lately there’s been a trend in education to questions based knowledge.

Make sure you like > Daily Green Post on Facebook < to be updated every time we find new tips on helping the environment, plus exciting and innovative new ways to help you and your family.

It’s actually quite simple, end up being an eco friendly person. Kids imitate grownups, specifically those who are close to them, like their parents i.e. YOU…!

More… Eco-Kids projects

For a child to comprehend and take care of nature they have to see adults doing it themselves. They have to understand how important nature is, from the basic earth they stand upon and the water they drink, in addition to the trees that provide them shade.

In our residence green living is now a part of our typical everyday regimen. When you add eco friendly living ideas to your house, keep in mind your children so they will enjoy this new way of living as well.

Produce your own traditions that help secure the natural environment. Plant a tree, grow a family yard, or spend one Sunday each month picking up trash around your community.

Ecological footprint for kids – Global Eco-children

Much better yet, ask your kids for their thoughts on how your household can go green to celebrate earth day and every day, and you may be impressed at the ideas they find with their imaginative minds, never underestimate the power of children’s imaginations.

Cool the Earth Inc. is a non-profit instructional company based in Northern California, that’s worth checking out. The goal of Cool the Earth is to inform children and their households about climate change and to try and motivate them to make easy quantifiable activities in their home to minimize their carbon emissions. Presently, the organization provides programming to over 100 primary schools.

What kind of planet are we delegating our children?

More… Eco-Kids projects

We as individuals whine a lot about pollution and the green-house affect of global warming, but what’s the point of griping if we do not do our bit attempting to make environmentally friendly selections?

Here’s a fascinating story from the CTV News in Canada.

A young girl with her own blog site at the mature age of 10 years is encouraging her elders to start making a difference to the environment they live in.

Maybe if children in schools the world over came into contact with this information, they would get together and start badgering their parents and elders into being more responsible for their actions and start becoming more responsible to the environments they live in.

Young eco-kids initiatives are becoming more prevalent as we move into the 21st century.

Here is the article from CTV.

Kid eco-blogger’s Earth Hour imperative: Do your part!

Pint-sized environmentalist Hannah Alper is encouraging everyone, both young and old, to do more than just flick off their lights for the seventh annual Earth Hour.

The ten-year-old animal lover and author of the popular environmental blog CallMeHannah.ca says: everyone should take time to reflect this Saturday, between from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. local time, on how they can live a greener lifestyle.

“I try to motivate kids and adults to see how special the environment is and how much we really need it,” Alper said on CTV’s Canada AM on Friday.

Her project, called the Stop, Start and Continue Pledge, asks participants to download a ‘Pledge Certificate’ from her website, then use it to jot down three eco-resolutions.

“Stop is a negative pledge but can be turned into a positive one,” explained Alper.

“Think of something you’re doing that’s harmful to the environment and then write ‘I will stop littering, I will stop using plastic water bottles.’”

Alper, who is an avid recycler and has a bin at home for reusable goods she donates to the Humane Society of Canada, lists a number of suggestions for pledges on her blog such as “I will organize a cleanup in my neighborhood” and “Grow a garden and try to plant some of my vegetables.”

“It makes you feel really good when you start doing it because you’re starting to make a difference,” said Alper, who had the opportunity to interview her role model, environmentalist and broadcaster David Suzuki’s daughter Severn-Cullis Suzuki, in February.

If you would like to meet Hannah below is a video of the interview with, Severn-Cullis Suzuki.

Alper said her favorite pledge is the ‘continue’ one which asks participants to persist with whatever eco-actions they begin.

“What’s so awesome about it is that you’ll realize you’re making a difference,” explained Alper, who has been named an Earth Hour team captain by the World Wildlife Fund, the global environmental group which organizes the event.

Earth Hour began as a Sydney-only event in 2007.

The city’s iconic Harbour Bridge and Opera House went dim for the event.

Last year, hundreds of world landmarks, including Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate and the Great Wall of China went dark for the annual event.

The bald eagle, America’s national symbol, is flying high after spending three decades in recovery.

The government took the eagle off the Endangered Species Act’s “threatened” list.

I would like to see us have more days like this when we can announce success and victory and delisting of species.”

Since the 1970s, the government has worked hard to save the bald eagle, which was dying off because of habitat destruction, illegal shooting and contamination of its food source.

It was first listed as endangered, then threatened, and now is off the list entirely.

Bald eagle populations severely declined in the lower 48 states between 1870 and 1970 because of hunting, habitat loss and the use of DDT.

DDT, a powerful insecticide, made bald eagle eggshells so weak they couldn’t produce viable offspring.

Behavior

Bald eagles are usually solitary, but are sometimes found in small flocks.

Bald eagles mate for life, but sometimes spend part of the year away from each other.

Most bald eagles migrate during the winter to a different feeding ground.

Bald Eagle Facts for Kids number 3.

Food

Bald eagles eat mostly fish, but will also feed on small mammals and water birds.

They are at the top of their food chain.

Bald Eagle Facts for Kids number 4.

Life Cycle

Female bald eagles lay one to three eggs in the spring.

After 12 to 15 weeks, the baby eagles leave the nest.

Bald eagles are adults when they are 4 years old.

Bald eagles live 20-30 years in the wild but can live up to 60 in captivity.

Bald Eagle Facts for Kids number 5.

Habitat

Bald eagles can be found all over North America, but prefer to live near water, usually on the coast or around wetlands.

They make nests in tall trees, near water.

Adult bald eagles have no known predators, but young eagles in the nest are sometimes preyed on by ravens, raccoons, and crows.

Status

At one time there were only about 2,000 bald eagles. They were threatened by overhunting and pollution.
Thanks to protection and breeding programs, there are now about 35,000 bald eagles.

The facts above were sourced from Globio a seriously good education site for younger people!

Vermicomposting for kids

Mrs. Rice shows kids how to create a worm habitat out of a plastic tub.

Kids learning about habitats and life cycles can see how worms live, eat, and multiply. Keeping worms for fertilizer is called vermicomposting – so kids will learn about that and the benefits of their own worm farm.

Below I have taken an extract from Wikipedia so that we all know (grownups included) exactly what, worm composting/vermicomposting is and what it is used for.

Now, when you are asked those difficult questions, you will know the answers or at least in what direction to point your kids in.

Vermicompost is the product or process of composting using various worms, usually red wigglers, white worms, and earthworms to create a heterogeneous mixture of decomposing vegetable or food waste, bedding materials, and vermicast.

Vermicast, also called worm castings, worm humus or worm manure, is the end-product of the breakdown of organic matter by an earthworm.

These castings have been shown to contain reduced levels of contaminants and a higher saturation of nutrients than do organic materials before vermicomposting.

Containing water-soluble nutrients, vermicompost is an excellent, nutrient-rich organic fertilizer and soil conditioner.

This process of producing vermicompost is called vermicomposting.

As a fertilizer:
Vermicompost can be mixed directly into the soil, or seeped in water and made into a worm tea by mixing some vermicompost in water, bubbling in oxygen with a small air pump, and steeping for a number of hours or days.

The microbial activity of the compost is greater if it is aerated during this period.

The resulting liquid is used as a fertilizer or sprayed on the plants.

The dark brown waste liquid, or leachate, that drains into the bottom of some vermicomposting systems as water-rich foods break down, is best applied back to the bin when added moisture is needed due to the possibility of phytotoxin content and organic acids that may be toxic to plants.

The pH, nutrient, and microbial content of these fertilizers varies upon the inputs fed to worms.
Pulverized limestone, or calcium carbonate can be added to the system to raise the pH.

Benefits of worm composting/vermicomposting.

Soil

Improves its physical structure

Enriches soil with micro-organisms (adding enzymes such as phosphatase and cellulase)

Microbial activity in worm castings is 10 to 20 times higher than in the soil and organic matter that the worm ingests

Attracts deep-burrowing earthworms already present in the soil

Improves water holding capacity

Plant growth

Enhances germination, plant growth, and crop yield

Improves root growth and structure

Enriches soil with micro-organisms (adding plant hormones such as auxins and gibberellic acid)

Economic

Biowastes conversion reduces waste flow to landfills

Elimination of biowastes from the waste stream reduces contamination of other recyclables collected in a single bin (a common problem in communities practicing single-stream recycling)

Creates low-skill jobs at local level

Low capital investment and relatively simple technologies make vermicomposting practical for less-developed agricultural regions

Environmental

Helps to close the “metabolic gap” through recycling waste on-site

Large systems often use temperature control and mechanized harvesting, however other equipment is relatively simple and does not wear out quickly

Production reduces greenhouse gas emissions such as methane and nitric oxide (produced in landfills or incinerators when not composted or through methane harvest)

First of all, learning about the damaging influences of our energy utilization today is important for them to comprehend why there ought to be more ways to create energy.

Since the electric power that we utilize today originates from non-renewable resources we are setting ourselves up for a big fall.

Scientific experts are working today to ensure that when we do run out of the resources needed for power, we will have the ability to convert to an additional means without missing a beat.

The problem with that is we should not wait until the resources are gone before we switch over.

We should have the ability to switch over in the near future and conserve what we have left.

An additional problem with our energy manufacturing today is that it is damaging to the environment.

In order to protect our atmosphere we need to teach our children how we can all join together in order to conserve solar energy.

Solar energy can produce power, making use of natural resources that will bring in the renewable energy that we need.

In order to make this affective we need to have the ability to locate solar sources that are not too costly; but can however, easily supply the renewable energy that we require.

A standard residence can benefit significantly by switching to solar power.

It is surprisingly easy to do.

When you build your house you can easily create it using solar power as a method to naturally produce electrical power into your house, heat your water, and most other operations by making use of solar energy.

In the long run, we benefit by not paying for a resource that is gradually eating up our natural resources.

Our children will be rewarded by our mindful planning and green-thinking.

All ages can easily benefit from saving solar energy, however it needs to start now in order to be beneficial in the future.

Instructing our kids in the various methods to conserve energy, and how we need to come up with ways to save solar energy is vital for the future of our planet.

One day we may not need to run power lines through our, streets and gardens due to the fact that we will all have solar power boxes in the back yard as an alternative.

So, what is Solar Energy for Kids; leave your comments below and many thanks for taking the time to read this article.
