Wouldn’t it be nice to forget about the rising cost of food in the shops and just eat the very best organic vegetables and fish (Yes, fish is all part of aquaponic gardening) whenever the mood takes your fancy…!!!

If your answer is a resounding ‘YES’ to all these questions then this article – ‘what is aquaponics’ – is for you, so please read on, and your wishes just might become a reality.

  • So, where did it all begin?

Aquaponic gardening systems began with hydroponics, which is basically growing your plants in individual pots with water.

Nonetheless, the hydroponic system involves utilizing many chemicals and fertilizers, therefore the plants growing in them are not organic.

In my opinion the top benefit of growing vegetables the aquaponic way is not having the need to use fertilizers and chemical substances when developing your aquaponic system.

Aquaponics or aquaponic farming means producing fish and plants in a natural and organic interdependence.

Thus, you produce fish in typical aquarium like containers, and after a certain duration you “plant” the vegetable seeds.

Then you simply care for the fish and the plants will grow and establish themselves naturally with very little assistance from you.

Now, you have to admit that this is a brilliant concept..!!

The aquaponic gardening principle is simple: the fish provide food and fertilizer for the plants (their waste), while the plants cleanse the water for the fish, producing excellent conditions for them to develop.

If you take good care of your fish and see to it that their water is always oxygenated appropriately, then your plants will not require any other type of care.

  • So long as your fish are happy, your plants will be as well; a perfect symbiotic relationship.

There are plenty of advantages such a system can offer you:

  • First of all self-reliance from the market as you will grow your own vegetables in the convenience of your own garden
  • Second, terrific use of your garden space, as you will just require a far smaller area for your aquaponic gardening system
  • Third, there is the convenience concern, as you no longer have to dig the ground and plant the seeds outside, bend over and over again to clear the land from weeds and harvest the crops.
  • Fourth, in fact you do not need land at all

This is by far the simplest, best and most beneficial sort of gardening that has ever existed.
