Environmentally-friendly vehicles were displayed by the Gulf Organisation for Research and Development during the 18th UN Climate Change Conference.

A solar-powered car and a vehicle that captures its own carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions are among the innovations on display at the Qatar Sustainability Expo, which runs until December 7th in Doha in conjunction with the 18th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP18).

The event, which showcases environmentally-friendly products designed to reduce gas emissions that harm the earth’s climate, is taking place at the Doha Exhibition Centre with the participation of local government institutions and private sector companies from Qatar and abroad.

The exhibiting companies represent a wide span of the business sector, from real estate to energy firms such as Qatar Solar Technologies (QSTec), which is showcasing its solar-powered car.

Masdar, a renewable energy and sustainable technologies company based in the UAE, is exhibiting a solar-powered plant project, titled Shams 1.

The company’s section also features a number of other environmentally-friendly products, including a solar tent and the “London Array” offshore wind farm.

The exhibits are not limited to cars or solar-powered applications in generating clean energy. The Qatar Green Building Council also exhibited a house featuring an ultra-low energy building design as part of the Baytna (Our Home) project.

“The house of the future is a step towards setting new standards for green buildings, where new buildings produce the lowest energy consumption rates possible,” said Meshaal al-Shammary, director of the Qatar Green Building Council.

Upcoming environmental events in the Gulf include a sustainability week set for January 13th-17th in Abu Dhabi.
