Make Your Own Non-Toxic Multipurpose Eco Friendly Cleaners
If you spill something on your counter or floor, you probably have some sort of “all-purpose cleaner” that you reach for, and it’s most likely in a spray bottle.
However most of those chemical-laden cleaners are highly questionable and can be fairly hazardous – their labels are festooned with cautions about accidental intake, inhalation of fumes, eye contact, skin contact, etc., I’m sure you’ve seen all the warnings on the containers and packaging.

Nonetheless, you can use the empty containers of these cleaners to hold your own home-made, non-toxic cleaners.
Just see to it that you dispose of the components properly (contact your local EPA or strong waste authority) and make sure you cleanse the bottle totally if you decide to re-use it.
Right, here are three recipes for all-purpose, non-toxic cleaners for your house.
A couple of them are sprays and the other one is a creamy scrubber. While they are as non-toxic as far as cleaners go, it’s not a great concept to let your kids get into them unsupervised (after all, these recipes do smell inviting).
However, these eco friendly cleaners are safe enough for your kids to help you with your cleaning under your supervision.
Lemon or Peppermint Creamy Scrub
In a 1-quart container (you can recycle an empty mayonnaise jar or plastic yogurt container), mix:
- 1 cup baking soda
- 1/4 cup borax laundry booster
- 1 tbsp liquid, naturally degradable soap
- 5-10 drops lemon or peppermint essential oil
Add water and stir till you attain a thick consistency, a bit like a thick milkshake. The thicker the consistency, the more powerful the cleaning power. Apply this scrub to clean your washroom and cooking area sinks, bathtub, faucets, and anywhere you would utilize standard soft scrubbers.
All-Purpose, Germ-Killing Spray
In a quart spray bottle, mix:
- Half a cup of white vinegar
- Three cups of water
- Ten drops of grapefruit seed extract or tea tree oil
- One teaspoon of naturally degradable liquid soap
- 10-20 drops of lavender or lemon essential oil
Shake this spray well and use it on sinks, counter tops, floors, or any smooth surface and clean with a cloth. For difficult spots on a tough surface or baked-on mess (such as in a stove or microwave), sprinkle baking soda over the tarnish or gunk and spray with the above spray until the sodium bicarbonate is thoroughly dampened. Let it sit for 15-25 minutes, then clean with a cloth. The discoloration may need some effort, but the crusty things should come straight off. You can even utilize this spray on windows.
Oil Soap Spray
In a quart spray bottle, pour:
- One tbsp of oil soap (found in the cleaning aisle of your community store)
- 10-15 drops of essential oil, choose the one that suits you best
Fill the bottle with water. Shake well and make use of on floors (wood, vinyl or linoleum), cabinets, stoves, and so on.
Now you can consider your home genuinely, naturally clean – not toxically clean!
