I’ve been scouring the net for items of interest that we could all put to instant use, in the quest for a greener more sustainable environment.

And what do you think I found – VINEGAR – I’m sure with very little effort we could come with 1001 vinegar tips that would make a difference to our eco friendly approach to green living.

Vinegar – an earth friendly alternative to many chemicals

You can reduce the number of environmentally harsh and toxic chemicals used around your home by replacing them with more earth friendly, cheap and common substances such as vinegar.

Here are a bunch of handy vinegar tips to get you started.

Most table vinegar’s contain around 5 percent acetic acid. The most common types are White (usually made from corn) Malt (barley), Red Wine, white wine and apple cider vinegar.

Of these, probably the most versatile for non-consumption purposes is White vinegar.

White vinegar is incredibly cheap, particularly when bought in bulk and has a long shelf life.

Important note:
It appears that some brands of white vinegar may be derived from petroleum (crude oil) and fossil fuel products.  
It’s important to check the label or with the manufacturer to ensure that the brand you buy doesn’t.

Handy vinegar tips

Note: spot test before going all out with any of the cleaning related tips below.

•  To remove calcium buildup on kettles and electric jugs, boil the kettle with half a cup of white vinegar and leave to soak for a while. Rinse with fresh water, reboil with same and your kettle should now be calcium deposit free.

• Place a small container of vinegar in your toilet and bathroom to eliminate odors.

• A half cup of vinegar added to a toilet bowl left overnight removes bowl odor.
  The smell of the vinegar will also dissipate overnight.

• A cotton ball soaked in vinegar and applied to bruises for an hour is said to speed up the healing process.

• Vinegar on minor burns and many sorts of stings can alleviate pain.

• For cleaning your dishwasher, vinegar frozen into ice cubes, then a couple added to the bottom of the dishwasher just prior to a cycle is an effective alternative to using heavy chemical cleaners.

• Old, stiff paintbrushes can be revived by dipping them into heated white vinegar for a couple of hours, followed by a rinse in soapy water. Beats using turpentine!
  

  Eco friendly way to keep ants out of your home 1001 vinegar tips.

• Use it as a broad leaf weed killer – spray it undiluted onto the leaves of weeds, being careful to avoid plants you wish to keep. A mix of vinegar and salt can be used to keep weeds and grass out of driveway cement joins.

• For pet owners, white vinegar poured onto pet urine mishaps on carpets, then blotted up with paper towel will prevent staining and odor.

• Spray a 50/50 mix of vinegar and water onto soap scum on shower screens, leave sit then wipe or rinse off.

• Vinegar can be used as a fabric softener by adding half the amount of vinegar as you would of your usual softening agent.

• Vinegar can also be used as a glass cleaner either mixed with water or used neat in a spray bottle.

• Use full strength vinegar to polish chrome and stainless steel.

• Use a 50/50 vinegar and water mix to clean your iron. Add the mixture to your iron and allow it steam itself clean.

• Ants hate vinegar; so spray it around doorways and other areas they frequent to repel them.

… not to mention vinegar is great for chips and salad dressings.

Giving thought to the environment in the design and construction phase of development can make a massive difference on the constant fight against global warming.

A large percentage of the total carbon dioxide emissions given off in most countries comes from housing; generally over 35%.

So, you can see green building is essential if we want to cut down on the emissions of carbon dioxide which adds greatly to the greenhouse gases, which in turn increases global warming – a vicious spiral!

One of the most obvious ways to make a difference, is to consider how well your house is insulated.

So, how you keep your home heated in winter or cool in summer
is very important as they can both impact on global warming.

Good insulation in your home will the lessen the need for such extreme heating or air conditioning, and will also save you money; sounds good to me!

Green building is crucial for a variety of reasons but the primary reason is that it will reduce your emissions of greenhouse gases.

Therefore, if ‘green building’ will help reduce global warming
maybe it’s time for us all to give it, the consideration it warrants.

What we really need is a sustainable power that isn’t harmful to our environment, but is it possible?

If you read all the debates that rage on in most of the media, you would have to conclude that it’s a hard one to call.

When it comes to big business and governments, there are so many interests to take into account; and of course big business, big money and big profits will always take priority over the likes of you and me.

Our voice is just too small to make any difference, but if we band together, we really could make our voice heard.

(ZEH)  Zero energy homes, generally means a house where all the households energy needs are provided by alternative sources.

People often confuse the meaning; thinking it means ‘No Electricity’ usage.

Because of the residential status of these types of homes, solar panels and solar water heating schemes are the typical kind of power used by these dwellings.

Wind turbines for regular residential homelife are rare in most residential districts.

Obviously, all zero energy homes will require some form of back-up support.

Because of the ever-changing needs in power consumption in the average zero energy homes:

• Sudden cold snap
• Heat Wave
• Extra washing, laundry and cleaning (Due to an Influx of visitors)

Zero energy homes aren’t  totally off the grid because the sun cannot always be relied upon to shine and levels of power can often change because of circumstances beyond our control.

In reality, zero energy homes stay linked up to the utility grid, and often operate in net metering.

Now this is one of the most beneficial parts; when you use net metering, it entails that, both the power you use from the grid and the amount you put back into the grid are calculated.

Hybrid Power System

Since an electricity meter can gyrate forward or backward, the householder gets accredited for the power he or she puts back into the grid, which stands you in good stead against those times when you need back-up support.

How do zero energy homes (ZEH) work?

Singapore tests eco-friendly homes!

(CNN) — Singapore’s first public housing blocks built to be environmentally sustainable have become the testing ground for future projects.

From afar, the high-rises of Punggol Eco-Town look unremarkable, but they are the first large-scale experiment to make public housing – eco-friendly homes, in Singapore, a tropical city-state that is hot year-round.

CNN’s Liz Neisloss reports on how Singapore is bringing sustainable housing to a new level, in this video on eco friendly homes.

Over 80% of Singapore’s residents live in public housing, called HDBs, after the government agency that builds them.

“What we have done is that we put in various eco friendly homes features that helps in terms of capitalizing on the wind, enhancing greenery, reducing energy consumption, water usage, how to promote waste recycling, et cetera, all in one development,” said Ng Bingrong, the project director, Treelodge@Punggol.

The eco-friendly homes methods range from commonplace and practical to highly innovative.

Plant-covered roofs naturally lower the buildings’ temperature, and the towers’ orientation, facing away from the sun, helps too.

Painting the buildings white helps keep them cool and bring in sunlight.

Alan Tan, the director of HDB’s Environment Sustainability Research team says the project’s variety of experiments will have wider implications for future housing in Singapore.

“Punggol Eco-Town is in fact a living laboratory for us,” said Tan. “This is where we test bed a lot of urban solutions for us to identify which of those are workable and for us to adopt, for us to introduce more to our public housing,”

• Inside the apartments, tap water that goes down the drain is used to flush toilets.
• Solar energy powers elevators, lighting and water pumps.

And various indicators placed around the buildings, like the ones found in the elevators that show the amount of solar energy being outputted, provide constant reminders to the residents of the different lifestyle they are living.

In the sizzling summer heat I’ve been thinking about igloos. To chill out in, of course, but also because I admire their elemental simplicity.

Inuits traditionally used bone knives to carve bricks from quarries of hardened snow. A short, low tunnel led to the front door, trapping heat in and keeping out fierce cold and critters.

Mortar wasn’t needed, because the snow bricks were shaved to fit, and at night the dome ossified into a glistening ice fort.

The human warmth inside melted the ice just enough to seal the seams.

The idea behind such homes was refuge from elements and predators, based on a watchful understanding of both.

The igloo was really an extension of the self — shoulder blades of snow and backbone of ice, beneath which a family slept, swathed in thick animal fur, beside one or two small lamps burning blubber.

All the building materials lay at hand, perpetually recycled, costing nothing but effort.

The beginnings of the ultimate Green City!?

Picture most of our houses and apartment buildings today — full of sharp angles, lighted by bulbs and colors one doesn’t find in nature, built from plywood, linoleum, iron, cement and glass.

Despite their style, efficiency and maybe good location, they don’t always offer us a sense of sanctuary, rest or well-being.

Because we can’t escape our ancient hunger to live close to nature, we encircle the house with lawns and gardens, install picture windows, adopt pets and Boston ferns, and scent everything that touches our lives.

This tradition of doing and undoing doesn’t really make sense or promote healthy living or a sustainable planet, so there’s an impassioned trend worldwide toward building green cities with living walls and roofs and urban farms in skyscrapers.

Vertical gardens and living roofs are sprouting up everywhere.

Mexico City’s three eco-sculptures, carpeted in over 50,000 plants, tower above car-clogged avenues. Not quite what we are looking for in our ideal green city.

A blooming tapestry of plants adorns the exterior walls of the Quai Branly Museum in Paris.

Inside Lisbon’s Dolce Vita shopping center, a plush vertical meadow undulates.

In Milan’s Café Trussardi, diners and flâneurs sit in a glass-box courtyard beneath a hint of heaven: a vibrant cloud of frizzy greens, cascading vines and flowers.

The Plant, an old meatpacking building in Chicago, has morphed into an eco farm, home to tilapia fish breeders, mushroom gardeners and hydroponically grown vegetables.

Xero Flor America, based in North Carolina, has already sold 1.2 million square feet of living roofs.

Patrick Blanc, a botanist and a pioneer of the vertical garden (whose own house in the suburbs of Paris includes growing walls and an aquarium floor), has designed or inspired living walls for the New York Botanical Garden and a luxury apartment building in Sydney, among dozens of businesses, homes, schools and museums, whose walls whisper and bloom.

The green city goal, is homes and public spaces that are live organisms that will scrub the air of pollutants, increase oxygen, reduce noise, save energy and refresh the spirit.

Big cities are hot spots, on average 13 to 16 degrees warmer than the surrounding countryside.

Three and a half billion people now live in cities, and scientists predict that by 2050 cities will contain two-thirds of the world’s population and most of its pollution.

As people flock to urban centers where ground space is limited, Green Cities with green walls and roofs and skyscraper farms offer improved health and well-being, renewable resources, reliable food supply, and relief to the environment.

Simple methods to improve your home’s eco-friendliness.

Most of us want to do our part to protect the world we live in, but without a huge paycheck, that can appear a little difficult, if not impossible.

But doing your part does not need to be too hard. Small steps add up to a big distinction, you merely have to know which ones to take when creating your eco house.

1. Use less water

Conserving water is everything about little steps, here are a few that will certainly help you save large amounts.

• Shut off the water while you brush your teeth
• Take showers that are a minute or 2 briefer
• Only flush the commode when you have to
• Only run full loads of washing and dishes
• Purchase from sustainable producers.
  ( These are farmers, ranchers, and additional producers that use methods that pollute less and use less water. You can do some research online or ask at your neighborhood organic market to find these items. )

2. Use less energy

If you do not have the cash to buy a hybrid vehicle or convert your home to solar power, you can make a large difference with small changes.

• Buy energy effective appliances. They may be more expensive, however make up for the raised cost in lower energy statements.
• Unplug battery chargers when you’re not utilizing them. Cellular phone and additional chargers consume powers even if there’s absolutely nothing attached to them.

All of us know that going green methods are better for the planet and environment, however it’s actually better for you as well.
