$600 million eco-resort comes a step closer

A $600 million eco-resort on Great Keppel Island in Queensland has come a step closer with the release of an environmental impact statement.

If the re-development is approved it will see a low-rise eco-tourism resort built over a 12 year period and will be the first major tourist development on the Great Barrier Reef in decades.

Tourism Queensland CEO said: the resort would bring hundreds of jobs and millions of dollars into the region and be a huge show of confidence in the future of the state’s $18 billion tourism industry.

Developer Tower Holidays closed the original, iconic resort – which was known as a hedonistic singles party island – after buying it.

Its plans were scuttled by the Federal Government on environmental concerns three years ago and developers said government red tape was holding back investment in the industry.

Queensland’s tourism industry has struggled in the past two years following natural disasters such as the Brisbane floods, Cyclone Yasi and the Japan tsunami leading to a decline in tourists from one of the state’s biggest source markets.

However, home-made Eco friendly window cleaning solutions is a novel idea to many people of this generation.

This is one of those times that looking to the past could resolve some of our current issues.

Below are some economical, easy-to-make recipes for effective window cleaners.

You probably have some of these active ingredients on hand.

If not, these items are very affordable and they are diluted with water so they last a long. time.

• Vinegar

No list of home-made cleansing items would be total without some. mention of vinegar, a germ killer and grease cutter in one.

White vinegar (not cider, balsamic or any of the other various vinegars) is responsible for that streak-free, clear glass we all want for our windows.

To give your windows a sparkling clean with just vinegar and water:

1 teaspoon/up to 1 tablespoon vinegar per 2 cups of water (don’t go too heavy on the vinegar as it could cause fogging).

Another option would be to integrate this mixture with: Liquid soap

To the above vinegar-water mixture, include 1/2 teaspoon Castile soap or various other naturally degradable fluid soaps.

Spray on, wipe with a soft fabric, to remove the cleaning solution.

Just using soap and water is a popular choice, as well:

Mix 1 tbsp Castile soap, which is made from saponified veggie oils and therefore ecologically friendly, with 2 cups of water.
Saturate a sponge in this soapy water and apply  liberally to windows.
Make use of a squeegee to remove any surplus cleaning solution and wipe dry with crumpled newspaper or a soft fabric.

The Bottom Line
If you look around, almost everything we use can be recycled.

Most of it won’t bring you any cash or compensation, but if you take a few minutes to recycle it will save the planet from being overloaded with debris.

I’ve been scouring the net for items of interest that we could all put to instant use, in the quest for a greener more sustainable environment.

And what do you think I found – VINEGAR – I’m sure with very little effort we could come with 1001 vinegar tips that would make a difference to our eco friendly approach to green living.

Vinegar – an earth friendly alternative to many chemicals

You can reduce the number of environmentally harsh and toxic chemicals used around your home by replacing them with more earth friendly, cheap and common substances such as vinegar.

Here are a bunch of handy vinegar tips to get you started.

Most table vinegar’s contain around 5 percent acetic acid. The most common types are White (usually made from corn) Malt (barley), Red Wine, white wine and apple cider vinegar.

Of these, probably the most versatile for non-consumption purposes is White vinegar.

White vinegar is incredibly cheap, particularly when bought in bulk and has a long shelf life.

Important note:
It appears that some brands of white vinegar may be derived from petroleum (crude oil) and fossil fuel products.  
It’s important to check the label or with the manufacturer to ensure that the brand you buy doesn’t.

Handy vinegar tips

Note: spot test before going all out with any of the cleaning related tips below.

•  To remove calcium buildup on kettles and electric jugs, boil the kettle with half a cup of white vinegar and leave to soak for a while. Rinse with fresh water, reboil with same and your kettle should now be calcium deposit free.

• Place a small container of vinegar in your toilet and bathroom to eliminate odors.

• A half cup of vinegar added to a toilet bowl left overnight removes bowl odor.
  The smell of the vinegar will also dissipate overnight.

• A cotton ball soaked in vinegar and applied to bruises for an hour is said to speed up the healing process.

• Vinegar on minor burns and many sorts of stings can alleviate pain.

• For cleaning your dishwasher, vinegar frozen into ice cubes, then a couple added to the bottom of the dishwasher just prior to a cycle is an effective alternative to using heavy chemical cleaners.

• Old, stiff paintbrushes can be revived by dipping them into heated white vinegar for a couple of hours, followed by a rinse in soapy water. Beats using turpentine!
  

  Eco friendly way to keep ants out of your home 1001 vinegar tips.

• Use it as a broad leaf weed killer – spray it undiluted onto the leaves of weeds, being careful to avoid plants you wish to keep. A mix of vinegar and salt can be used to keep weeds and grass out of driveway cement joins.

• For pet owners, white vinegar poured onto pet urine mishaps on carpets, then blotted up with paper towel will prevent staining and odor.

• Spray a 50/50 mix of vinegar and water onto soap scum on shower screens, leave sit then wipe or rinse off.

• Vinegar can be used as a fabric softener by adding half the amount of vinegar as you would of your usual softening agent.

• Vinegar can also be used as a glass cleaner either mixed with water or used neat in a spray bottle.

• Use full strength vinegar to polish chrome and stainless steel.

• Use a 50/50 vinegar and water mix to clean your iron. Add the mixture to your iron and allow it steam itself clean.

• Ants hate vinegar; so spray it around doorways and other areas they frequent to repel them.

… not to mention vinegar is great for chips and salad dressings.

 Over the course of the year, the global wind energy market has seen massive growth of around 20.6%, according to a report by Global-Data.

Whilst the growth of major wind power markets in places such as the US, Spain, France, and India are expected to slow down in coming years, it seems likely that emerging markets within Asia-Pacific and South/Central America will more than compensate for the loss.

The offshore wind power market is expected to take off in the near future, correlating with larger scale wind power projects becoming fully operational. At present, development is largely concentrated in Europe, accounting for over 3.2 gigawatts of offshore wind power capacity. Whilst this is a considerably large amount, offshore wind power only accounts for about 1.5% of the wind market at present. However, commercial offshore wind farms are currently in development, meaning capacity is expected to grow significantly, to approximately 52 gigawatts by 2020, representing about 7% of the total wind power market.

The growing popularity of offshore wind power is also having a positive impact on related markets. For example, the revenue of offshore turbine installation vessels increased by $140 million between 2006 and 2010, and is expected to reach $2,156.5 million by 2020. These vessels are an important part of larger offshore wind turbines, which explains their increasing demand. Around 12 new second-generation vessels are expected to be manufactured and installed in European seas by the end of 2013 to cater for the uptake of wind power.

Finally, the installed energy capacity of global wind energy has increased from 74,212 megawatts in 2006 to 238,351 megawatts at the end of 2011, with 40,714 megawatts coming online only last year. Taking into account the increasing investment from emerging economies, the installed capacity of global wind power will reach around 736,957 megawatts by 2020….
